A screw drive opener has a metal, threaded rod that will move the trolley across the tracks. As the opener operates, it causes the lifting mechanism to pull the door open or push it down.
This type of opener is best used with wide or heavier doors. It is compact, yet very powerful. Also, it has a much quieter operation than a chain or belt drive.
The belt drive is similar to a chain drive, but it uses a belt instead to push or pull the door. If you do need a quieter system, then this is the way to go. It is best used for garages that are attached to your home. One thing to note, it is a bit more expensive than the chain drive type, but worth the cost for lower sound.
The jackshaft is similar to the other openers, but, it is installed on the side of the door. Instead of being installed above the door. One of the reasons this is so important, is that many new homes are being built with taller garages. If your ceilings are high, it will make it very difficult to plug in the opener.
A jackshaft is compatible with vertical, high, or standard lift doors. It is important to note that it cannot be used with a low headroom door. Also, it can only be used with a system that has torsion springs.

The Different Parts Of an Opener

A dip switch is the part of the opener that tunes your remote and opener together. In order for them to communicate, the tiny switches inside of the parts need to match up. Otherwise, the two parts will not communicate with each other.

Receivers and Transmitters
The receiver is located inside of the opener. It communicates with the transmitter, which is the remote or wall mount. When the transmitter is pushed, it signals the receiver to operate the motor inside of the opener.
Transmitters that are remotes can be 2 or 3 buttons, depending on how many doors you have. Each button will need to be programmed to the proper open based off of the dip switch pattern. You can also have the buttons on your wall that operate the different openers.
The capacitor is the electric component inside of the opener that causes the mechanism to push or pull the door. When you push the transmitter, the receiver gets the signal and then power builds up in the capacitor which causes it to work.
Which Frequency Is a Garage Door Opener?
Your garage door opener should be a frequency between 300-400 MHz. This way, it keeps from interfering with other types of electronics such as cell phones, military devices, airplanes, and more.
Your opener is designed to hop around between these frequencies to get the transmitter and receiver to communicate. This is a safety precaution that is built in to the technology to keep people from hacking your receiver.
How to Program a Remote to The Opener
In order for the receiver and transmitter to communicate, the frequencies must be right. Also, the dip switch patterns need to be the same. These patterns cannot be the same as your neighbor’s house.
